3.5 Netiquette

What is Netiquette?
Netiquette is the code of acceptable behaviors users should follow while on the Internet.

1. In e-mail, chat rooms, and newsgroup :

  • Keep messages brief.
  • Be careful when using sarcasm and humor, as it might be misinterpreted.
  • Be polite. Avoid offensive language.
  • Read the message before you send it.
  • Avoid sending or posting flames.
  • Avoid sending spam.

Do not use all CAPITAL LETTERS, which is the equivalent of SHOUTING!

Use emoticons to express emotion.

Use abbreviations and acronyms for phrases :

1. Blog
  • Short for Weblog
  • Is an informal website consisting of time-stamped articles or posts in a diary or journal format. (e.g: Blogspot, WordPress)
  • A microblog allow users to publish short messages usually between 100-200 characters. (e.g: Twitter)

2. Wiki - Wikipedia
  • A wiki is a collaborative website that allows users to create, add to, modify or delete the website content via their web browser.
  • A popular wiki is Wikipedia (free web encyclopedia)

Web site contains content that promotes or sells products or services

5. Portal
  • Is a Web site that offers a variety of Internet services.
  • Most portals offer these free services: search engine; news; sports; weather; maps and other communication services.

  • An educational Web site offers exciting, challenging avenues for formal and informal teaching and learning.

7. Entertainment
  • An entertainment Web site offers an interactive and engaging environment.
  • Offer music, videos, sports, games, ongoing Web episodes, chat rooms and more.

8. Personal

  • A private individual or family not usually associated with any organization may maintain a personal Web site or just a single Web page.

    The reason people publish personal Web site is want to share life experiences with the world.

9. News

  • A news Web site contains newsworthy material including stories and articles relating to current events, life, sports and the weather.

    Newspaper and television and radio stations are some of the media that maintain news Web sites.
